It's been said that necessity is the mother of invention. Who said that? Well, I checked Wikipedia. Apparently, a version of the term was used as early as the 600s B.C. A few hundred years later, Plato said something that was later interpreted as "The true creator is necessity, who is the mother of our invention." And, of course, there was the Frank Zappa band, The Mothers of Invention.
